Despite loving summer, by August I almost always feel like I’m ready to enjoy more quiet time and to focus in on my health. A number of my patients, friends and family members have shared that they’re also ready to get back into a better health routine these next few weeks!  Are you with me too?

One of the ways that we can decrease inflammation, cut down on our sugar-intake and boost our energy is to minimize our intake of drinks like beer, wine and cider and to support ourselves with better hydration habits!  

If you notice that your alcohol intake spikes over the summer, replacing a few of your alcoholic beverages with a tasty virgin Strawberry-Mint Spritzer will help you to get your habits back-on-track! Your approach doesn’t need to be all-or-none, and an example of gradual progress would be to start by replacing your weekday “after work wine” with this refreshing soda water based-spritzer.

As with any habit you’re looking to change we DON’T want to just cut it out and leave a gaping void! You MUST replace any habit that you’re looking to change with something new! 

My favourite alcohol-free drink this summer has been this virgin Strawberry-Mint Spritzer that I’ve been referring to as a strawberry-mojito (even though there’s no lime or rum).  It’s SO refreshing, and it’s a pretty drink that’s sure to impress! Virgin Strawberry-Mint Spritzer

Servings: 2  |  Prep time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups (750ml) of soda water
  • 6 strawberries, sliced
  • 1 large handful of mint leaves (approx. 12-15 leaves)
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 2-3 tbsp hot water (to dissolve the honey)
  • 1 cup of Ice

Instructions:

  1. Divide your mint leaves between 2 medium sized cocktail glasses
  2. To dissolve the honey, mix it with hot water in a small bowl and then pour half into each cup with the mint leaves
  3. Muddle/stir the leaves with the honey-sweetened water to release more minty flavour.
  4. Add the ice and 2 of the 3 strawberries to each cup.  
  5. Mix the ice and berries together to release some juice from the strawberries before topping with soda water and garnishing each cup with the last 2 strawberries.
  6. Relax, kick back and enjoy!
